Greetings from Estonia (Tom Hashimoto, -UK, 01/26/12 7:29 am)

Tere (Hello)!

Once again, my byline has changed--this time to Estonia/Japan. I am in Tartu, the historic town where its university hosted numerous aristocrats and intellectuals throughout the Russian Empire. Tartu today continues to attract brains from all over the Baltic and Scandinavian regions.

I am now sitting in a restaurant near the Town Hall, enjoying "suitsujuustusupp."  Ah, I love this language already! Yes, "supp" is easily identifiable. "Juust" is cheese. It means smoked cheese soup. Delicious!

The University of Tartu is best known as the home of the late Yuri Lotman, one of the titans of semiotics. Lotman's Structure of the Artistic Text is probably the best overview of how a semiotician reads poetry and literary prose.
